報告摘要:The use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in decision-making processes has raised widespread concerns about algorithmic bias affecting different social groups. Despite the growing adoption of these technologies in education, research on their fairness in this context remains limited. In this talk, Dr. Guanliang Chen will present his recent work on improving algorithmic fairness in education through a data sampling perspective. This research offers novel insights into mitigating biases and promoting equity in educational predictive models, paving the way for more inclusive and fair applications of AI in learning environments.

報告人簡介:Dr Guanliang Chen is a tenured Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Information Technology and a core member of the Centre for Learning Analytics at Monash University. Prior to joining Monash University, he obtained his Ph.D. from the Delft University of Technology (ranked #49 in QS World University Rankings 2025) in the Netherlands. His research is at the forefront of integrating responsible AI-driven language technologies to facilitate assessment and feedback in education. Dr Chen has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers, amassing more than 3,700 citations, with an h-index of 27 and an h10-index of 42. His research works have been published in international journals and conferences including AAAI, IJCAI, NAACL, COLING, AIED, LAK, Computers & Education, British Journal of Educational Technology, and IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies. Dr. Chen's work in identifying and reducing algorithmic bias in educational contexts has earned him significant recognition. He received the Outstanding Paper award at the 29th International Conference on Computational Linguistics (COLING) in 2022, and the Dean’s Award for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (Research) from Monash University’s Faculty of Information Technology in both 2021 and 2023. He is an editorial board member for two leading journals in technology-enhanced education, including 'Computers & Education: Artificial Intelligence' (a Q1 journal), and a key organizer for several international academic events. Notably, he held the position of Online Experiences Chair for AIED in 2022, 2023, and 2024
